Prepare the fire for cooking

Whenever you are cooking on an open fire you will want to have a sturdy cooking base over hot coals (not open flames). The heat from the coals will quickly cook your food without the risk of flames igniting your clothing while you are handling the cookware. Coals will build up in your fire pit as you let the fire burn and you can usually have a nice bed of coals to cook on in abut 30-45 minutes.

How to assemble your campfire nachos

Nachos are a layered dish, easily assembled. Start with ½ of your chips, then layer on your ingredients like meat, salsa, vegetables, and then a layer of cheese. Repeat and finish with a top layer of cheese.

  • If assembled in a cast iron skillet – carefully set on coals until cheese is melted
  • If assembled in a Dutch Oven – you can heat covered or open directly on the coal until cheese is melted
  • If assembled in a foil pack – double wrap in heavy duty foil, loosely seal so the cheese does not stick to the top of the foil and lay on top of coals – check after 7-10 minutes as foil pack cooking can go really fast!

When cheese melts nachos are ready. Carefully remove from fire and place on a hotplate or heat safe surface and serve with your cold ingredients such as sour cream and guacamole.
